A Bit About Cubic Zirconia
Cubic Zirconia, often referred to as “CZ”, is a rare mineral that has the appearance of diamonds. Jewelry made with cubic zirconia is very popular because of its low cost, durability, and beauty. It is found in most sterling silver jewelry and comes in many different cuts and colors.
CZ colors are produced by introducing certain metal oxides. The addition of cerium, for example, produces the red, orange, and yellow colors. This creates stones that closely resemble garnets, rubies, and yellow citrine, but with outstanding consistency and quality at a much lower cost. Adding chromium makes cz stones green, resembling emeralds and peridot. Introducing neodymium to the mix yields a purple color to achieve stones that resemble amethysts and the very popular lavender color. Erbium is used to create pink stones, and a golden brown color is achieved when titanium oxide is added.
CZ stones are the closest substitute for diamonds, and are actually indistinguishable from diamonds to the untrained eye. As a result, cubic zirconia continue to be an extremely popular mainstay in the jewelry market, particular for silver jewelry.
